Rhodes, GR
Imagery Oct 2025
Another night, another page o' pix from the medieval city of Rhodes, on the
eponymous Greek island. (How often do you get a chance to use "eponymous"?).
New town
Old Town
A rain puddle in the now-decrepit "New Market" complex, under the
pergola of the old fish market. There has been talk for years of the city reconstructing
the place. Now my pharmacist - located in the building - says she needs to be out by next
week,
so maybe the reconstruction is really happening. This is Greece; I'll believe it when
I see it. (The pharmacy is moving about a mile west. I'll find her!)
Unusual decor on a now-unusual vehicle. France's famous 2-horsepower car, made
for the rural market after the second world war. (There is no "ch" sound - or letter -
in Greek; They probably spell his name "Tse". I wonder how they pronounce it.)
Doesn't the medieval moat look majestic from this angle? Ozymandias
himself might have been proud!
Entering town from the Red Gate.
Funny furrin' spellings Dept:
Greek has no letter (or sound!) corresponding
to J. When foreign words come itno Greek, J becomes TZ, pronounced accordingly.
(I wanted to include some examples. Unfortunately there is some kind of problem
in my web-host that converts Greek letters (and umlauts!) into gibberish.
I have found references to the issue in system forums online. I have neither time
nor inclination to troll through forums searching for a workaround, if one exists.
It wasn't always this way; presumably the problem won't last forever. For now, apologies!
)
Do the sunsets here really become more colorful in the Winter? Or do I just
notice them more?
The cobbled streets in the Old City were mostly left by the Italians in the
twentieth century. In medieval times, the people depended on horses, whose hooves would
have been chewed to shreds by these cobbles. OTOH they leave some cool reflecting puddles
after a rain.
A nearby square and one of its residents on a peaceful night.
