Lindos
It is day-trip time; off to the island's #2 sightseeing destination
(after Rhodes Old Town): Lindos.
It is an historical place. Lindos was one of the three city-states that established
an island-wide union in the 300's B.C.
Snack Bar.
(An ongoing entertainment: furrin' spellings of words that don't really
fit the local language. Greek lends itself especially well to this game.)
Lindos' big sight is the ancient Acropolis, and a great sight it is! It is also a hefty
climb to the top of a high hill! My friend and I had both been up there before, so
this time we haired out,
and walked down to one of the lovely bays on the shore.
Even at this rather chilly season, the sun on the ocean makes colors that dance in the
eyes.
I started to say "... sun on the Aegean", but no - this is the east side of the island.
This is the open Eastern Mediterranean. The Aegean begins on the west side of Rhodes. (Or -
further south - of Kassos or Karpathos.)
Rhodes Town
None of the three ancient city-states wanted one of the others to be the capital of
their new union, so they established Rhodes Town from scratch on the windswept northern tip of
the island. Why there? None of them was using it for anything else.
Many centuries later in the 1300's, a band of crusaders called the Knights Of Jerusalem beat
a retreat from the holy land, re-branded as the Knights Of Rhodes, and established the fortified
medieval city of today.
This gate is officially named for St Athanasiou. Call it that, and few will know what
you mean; in real speech this is the San Francisco Gate.
Tourist-oriented cafes...
... in the Old City ...
... and the new.
Visor caps have a short life expectancy with me.
Sooner or later I forget
them, usually as I leave a cafe. I hope this one lasts long; it has souvenir value. I got it
in Fiji on my first vist, for the tropical sun. On the front you can see a Greek Eye and an
Australian magpie.
Mandraki, the original harbor of Rhodes Town.
The breakwater here has many homeless cats, whose life is made a little less hard by
kind-hearted local people. This makeshift shelter probably makes a lot of difference in the winter
rains and the icy winds from the North.
That is it for Rhodes for now.
Next up: some of those Slovakia pix that have been
accumulating.
Do videnia!
